Your Ultimate Diamond Stud Buying Guide

Looking for the most versatile diamond jewelry piece? Diamond studs are a must have piece in your jewelry collection. At THP, diamond studs are the always the first piece of jewelry to invest in - it is a perfect, timeless jewelry staple that you can wear every single day, and goes with every outfit. It is also a piece that grows with you and can be passed down generations.

One of the most commonly asked questions for diamond studs is: What size diamond studs should I buy?

This is a very personal question - because everybody has a different idea of what fits “everyday wear”. Typically a 0.5 carat each (or 1 carat Total Diamond Weight, TDW) is a gorgeous starting piece to capture sparkle in your everyday wear and easy to dress up and down without it overpowering your look.

Consider going up to 0.75 carat each (or 1.5 carat TDW) for an added pop!

Other things to keep in mind while buying studs:

Earring closures

There are three main types of closures used for studs:

Screw Backs

This is the most secure type of earring back. It consists of a threaded post and a nut that is spun onto the post until the back of the ear lobe, thus it can’t be pulled off and has to be unscrewed. They are secure but more time consuming. Screw backs therefore tend to be a good option only for high value earrings. If going above 1ct TDW studs, we recommend using Screwbacks for stress-free wear.

Friction Earring Backs

This is the simplest and most common type of earring back (also known as “push backs”). It consists of a flat plate with a hole the size of the post. It slides onto the post and goes against the ear. It has scrolls of metal that curve up and press against the post with a light spring tension that holds the back in place. Friction backs are easy to pop on and off so are very convenient. They come in a variety of sizes, with the smaller ones being the most affordable type earring back. We do not recommend using these for your diamond studs.

Flat-Backs

Flat backs as the name suggests have a flat backing, unlike a screw/friction one that has a butterfly back where the post sticks out (see image below). This prevents poking, but is also not secure. We recommend this only if you are choosing anything below 1ct TDW for your studs.

Last thing to keep in mind:

Since no two natural diamonds are the same, you’d want to buy these from a jeweler who is experienced enough to buy you two similar pairs with comparable weight, sparkle, and color.
